German levels A1-C2 - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
How to find the right language level for your German course
The classification of levels corresponds to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Deutsch in Graz offers 10 levels. An intensive course lasts 4 weeks (100 units plus 16 units workshop), the evening courses 8 weeks with 64 units (or 16 weeks with 32 units per course).
Learn German - level A1
Elementary use of language, no previous knowledge
At level A1 you will learn:
- understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and simple sentences
- to introduce themselves and others and to ask other people questions about themselves and give answers to these questions.
- communicate in a simple way when the other person speaks slowly and clearly
Learn German - level A2
A2.1: elementary use of the language, little previous knowledge
A2.2
At level A2 you will learn:
- communicate in simple, routine situations involving a direct exchange of information about familiar and common things. (e.g. personal and family information, shopping, work, local area)
- use simple means to describe your background and education, the immediate environment and things related to immediate needs.
Learn German - level B1
B1.1: independent use of the language, moderate prior knowledge
B1.2
At level B1 you will learn:
- understand main points when clear standard language is used and when it is about familiar things from work, school, leisure, etc.
- to deal with most situations encountered when traveling in the language area.
- express themselves simply and coherently on familiar topics and personal areas of interest.
- report on experiences and events, describe dreams, hopes and goals and give brief reasons or explanations for plans and opinions.
Learn German - level B2
B2.1: independent use of the language, intermediate knowledge
B2.2
At level B2 you will learn:
- understand the main content of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics
- understand technical discussions in their own specialist area
- to communicate spontaneously and fluently so that a normal conversation with native speakers is possible without major effort on either side.
- express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics,
- explain a point of view on a topical issue and state the advantages and disadvantages of different options.
Learn German - Level C1
C1.1: competent use of the language, very good previous knowledge
C1.2
At level C1 you will learn:
- understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and also grasp implicit meanings
- express themselves spontaneously and fluently without having to search for words more often in a clearly recognizable way.
- to use the language effectively and flexibly in social and professional life or in training and studies.
- express themselves in a clear, structured and detailed manner on complex issues and use various means of linking texts appropriately.
Learn German - level C2
C2.1: competent use of the language, excellent prior knowledge
C2.2
At level C2 you will learn:
- summarize information from different written and oral sources, giving reasons and explanations in a coherent presentation.
- express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely
- to make finer nuances of meaning clear even in more complex situations.
